The region played a huge part in England's industrial heritage, with coal mining in South Yorkshire, the woollen industry in West Yorkshire and steel-making in Sheffield. The fishing fleets of Hull and Grimsby provided food to fuel the Industrial Revolution. The people took a huge sense of pride in their achievements, which they still retain. In their day, the mine and mill owners built huge, impressive country houses with tremendous, beautiful gardens and many of these are now open to the public.
